As explained in OPC 40560, the machine and system category-level documents serve as an abstraction layer for the types of machinery with similar functionalities. Consequently, this machine and system-level document may also rely on models defined in OPC 40562-1.
Hydraulic excavators consist of a boom, arm, bucket, and cabin on a rotating substructure atop an undercarriage with tracks or wheels. These machines are mainly used for digging purposes as well as lifting and carrying tasks in various mining applications. Depending on the mining layout the hydraulic shovels can be orientated with the bucket towards the machine cabin (standard excavator), or can have the bucket that faces away from the cabin. Hydraulic excavators with fuel powered engines are common, but the share of electric powered machines, especially for the larger ones is rising. This allows the mine to take advantage of less expensive electric costs (where applicable), while simultaneously accepting a loss in machine mobility. In combination with haulage machines like rear dump trucks, hydraulic excavators are used to perform the loading part of the loading and hauling process in discontinuous mining operations.
